Croation Locals know the Croatian Sheepdog as the Hrvatski Ovcar. This breed is an old dog breed which dates back to the 14th century. This is a medium size breed and weighs over 36 pounds when fully mature. In addition, this is an active and very energetic breed and naturally very playful with their owners and their family. People generally consider this to be a healthy breed but it is not fully immune to being sick and still needs regular check-ups to maintain optimum health.

The Croatian Sheepdog History

Historical information about the breed dates it as far back as the 14th century in Croatia. their is very little genealogical information regarding where this breed came from and most information are just speculation or unproven theories. Just like most sheepdogs and herder breeds, the Croatian Sheepdog is a working dog that was specifically bred to help farmers tend to their livestock.

Where did the Croatian Sheepdog Come From?

The origin of this breed prior to its appearance in Croatia around the 14th century is in-concise as no exact historical background has been sufficiently verified as to the true origin of the breed.

While information of the breed is very limited, literature written around the early 1370 according to a bishop who said to have owned a Croatian Sheepdog stated in his manuscript that the breed did not change from 1374-1719.

Only locals knew this breed until 1935. Professor Romic started a breeding program and started working towards having the breed be recognized by the FCI which would allow the breed to be bred around the world. Because of this breeders give him the title as the “father of the Croatian Sheepdog” for his work in bringing the breed to the attention of breeders around the world. The breed was recognized by the Yugoslav Kennel Club in 1968 and was recognized by the FCI after 34 later in 1969
